This song opens up "A Charlie Brown Christmas" which was the very first Peanuts special. CBS was not crazy about the opening piece since they thought it was sad. Adding lyrics and a childrens chorus did make it somewhat happy. Now the song along with the TV special is a Christmas standard.

The orginal is heard on Xmas Radio stations across the country. Best known covers of the song were done by Chicago, and more recently the Christian Music group Mercy Me covered the song for their "Christmas Sessions" release. Their are other covers but Vince Guaraldi wins hands down. Maybe Chicago and Mercy Me will get spins down the road.
